If you are visiting Fukuoka for the first time, you must be wondering where to stay in Fukuoka City. The city itself is quite big and all the highlights and places of interests are quite spread out. And even though there are many hostels and hotels in Fukuoka, finding the right one in the right area can be overwhelming.
That’s how I felt the first time I visited Fukuoka. But I’ve been back to the city three times in the past few years and learned a lot about the city. Which is why I put together this Fukuoka accommodation guide so it can help you to find your perfect stay in Fukuoka City.
In this post, I will show you all the highlights of the two Fukuoka wards and my honest review of the places I stayed during my previous trips. Also, I will include my overall recommendation for a first-time traveller to Fukuoka, Japan.
My Fukuoka accommodation review is my opinion, and I received no compensation. I only want to share what I love.

Before you search for Fukuoka accommodations
Before you book your stay in Fukuoka, take a look at my post on everything you need to know before going to Japan. I included a lot of travel information, including how to get around Japan and other travel tips.
Here are few additional tips for booking accommodations in Fukuoka:
- Guest rooms are generally quite small and basic. But that’s part of the Japanese accommodation culture and aesthetics.
- Check-in at 3pm and check-out at 11am.
- Room wear and indoor slippers are always included.
- Most mid-range hotels will have toiletries placed at reception or near elevator so you can take what you need.
- Most Fukuoka hotels will have shared coin laundry. Sometimes high-end hotels will have it in the guest room.
- Every hotel has their own housekeeping schedule – they do not clean the room everyday.
- Hotel prices can be higher on the weekends and during high seasons (cherry blossom, Christmas, etc)
- Pay attention to payment details like cancellation policy when you book your accommodations online. If you are not sure of your travel dates, choose the option where you can get a refund if you change your mind or if something comes up unexpectedly.
Fukuoka: Best Areas to Stay for Solo Travellers
First, let’s talk geography.
Nakasu River separates Hakata Ward (east) and Chuo Ward (west). And within each ward, there are many smaller areas or neighbourhoods as both wards are quite big.
Since the area in both wards are big, it can be confusing to mention them all. So, I recommend first time travellers to book a hostel or hotel between Hakata Station (in Hakata Ward) to the east and Tenjin and Daimyo neighbourhood (in Chuo Ward) to the west.
There are obviously other areas to stay in Fukuoka, but to simplify the process of choosing the best areas to stay in Fukuoka for a first time visitor, concentrate your efforts on searching the areas mentioned above.
Below I included reviews for several hostels and mid-range hotels in Fukuoka. I included a general overview of the accommodation and my honest opinion of each in the highlight and lowlight sections.
Here is a quick summary and map of the best areas to stay in Fukuoka and the places I stayed during my last few trips to Fukuoka.
| Areas in Fukuoka | Characteristics | Fukuoka Accommodations |
|---|---|---|
| Hakata Ward (pink) *Nakasu (purple) | *Located east side of Fukuoka City *Best area for shopping, eating, visiting attractions and taking day trips *Direct access to Hakata Station, Fukuoka Subway and long-distance buses | *The Lively Fukuoka Hakata ($$) Agoda | Booking |

Best Area to Stay in Fukuoka: Hakata Ward
Hakata Ward is located on the east side of Fukuoka City and is the most convenient area for travellers accessing train station and be close proximity to the Fukuoka Airport. This area is ideal for taking day trips and visiting other places in Kyushu.
There are many neighbourhoods in Hakata Ward but the majority of accommodations can be found around Hakata Station. And many popular hostels and hotels are concentrated in Nakasu, the entertainment district of Fukuoka, which is also known as the red light district. This is the “island” located between Hakata and Chuo Ward.
Why you should stay in Hakata Ward:
- Nearby attractions include Hakata Station, Hakata Old Town, Kawabata Shopping Arcade and Canal City Hakata
- Walking distance to many local Japanese restaurants and yatai stalls along Nakasu River
- Direct access to JR Trains and Shinkansen, Fukuoka Subway and many long-distance buses

Best Hotels in Hakata Ward
1. The Lively Fukuoka Hakata
The Lively Fukuoka Hakata is a contemporary hotel that is part of a big hotel chain that focuses on design, creating experiences and memories. Their spaces are hip and modern which attracts the young and hip crowd.
The hotel has 224 rooms and 7 room types. I chose the smallest room type, the Standard Double, which is a 12 sqm room with a double bed with Serta mattress, a pull-out desk and storage unit and a compact bathroom.
Moreover, the Lively has many common spaces for travellers to mingle and enjoy, including the lobby lounge and co-working space. They even offer free beer and cocktail during happy hour at the Lively Bar.
The Lively Fukuoka Hakata: highlights and lowlights
- Highlights: modern finishes, many common areas, free drinks between 5:30-6:30pm, 1-minute walk to Nakasukawabata Station (subway) which is on the airport (orange) line
- Lowlights: room feels small especially because of the low ceiling and dark finishes, bathroom is quite cramped

Address: 5 Chome-2-18 Nakasu, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka | Rate: from ¥9,200 for a Standard Double Room
Best Neighbourhood to Stay in Fukuoka: Chuo Ward
Chuo Ward is located on the west side of Fukuoka City and is central to all the best things to do in the city and the best eateries. This area is ideal for visitors who like to shop, eat and indulge in nightlife.
Out of all the neighbourhoods in Chuo Ward, there are two that are particular great for first time solo travellers.
Tenjin is Fukuoka’s shopping and entertainment district. It is a vibrant area with numerous department stores, local boutique shops and a diverse range of restaurants. Daimyo is next to Tenjin and is a trendy area with upscale boutique stores and local eateries.
Why you should stay in Chuo Ward:
- Nearby attractions include Tenjin Central Park, Acros Fukuoka, Yanagibashi Rengo Market, Maizuru Park, Ohori Park and shopping places like Shintencho Shopping District, Tenjin Underground Mall and Mina Tenjin
- Walking distance to many local Japanese cafes, restaurants and clubs
- Direct access to Nishitetsu Trains and Fukuoka Subway

Tenjin and Chuo Ward Hostels and Hotels
1. Hostel Stand By Me
Hostel Stand By Me is a small boutique budget hostel near Maizuru Park. The hostel has two floors of shared dormitory rooms and private twin rooms. There is a common area on the second floor which includes a lounge and a shared kitchen. Plus, there is a standing-bar-style cafe on the ground floor, which is open to the public.
I stayed in one of the dorm beds in the Single Bed Female Dormitory Room. For the price of dorm bed, I got a comfortable single bed with privacy curtains and access to all the common areas. There is coin laundry as well.
Hostel Stand By Me: highlights and lowlights
- Highlights: near Maizuru Park and Ohori Park, 10-minute walk to Akasaka Station (subway) which is on the airport (orange) line
- Lowlights: check-in starts from 7pm, 10am check-out time, must walk or take public transportation to “downtown” Tenjin area

Address: 1 Chome−3−22 Otemon, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka | Rate: from ¥2,600 for a Dormitory bed
2. H Hotel
H Hotel is a contemporary co-working hotel located in the Daimyo neighbourhood. Inspired by the West Coast vibe, there are 12 rooms to choose from. Each room is designed with simple and features that are thoughtfully curated.
The highlight of the hotel has to be common area. The shared areas include the co-working space with open-plan seating, collaborative areas and meeting rooms. Plus there is a rooftop balcony for guests to use.
I chose the Terrace Double Room, which is a 14 sqm room with a double bed, a small desk, a bathroom with standing shower. I chose the upgraded room because of the large terrace that is the width of the room.
H Hotel: highlights and lowlights
- Highlights: large terrace, located on a quiet street in Daimyo neighbourhood, west of Shintencho Shopping District, walking distance to many shops and restaurants, closest stations are Tenjin Station (subway) and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station (Nishitetsu Railway), coworking space is modern and not busy
- Lowlights: no facilities, Single Room is very small and claustrophobic (which is why I chose the upgraded terrace room), staff is only available at predetermined times

Address: 2 Chome-1-13 Daimyo, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka | Rate: from ¥11,000 for a Terrace Double Room
3. Cross Life Hakata Yanagibashi
Located next to Yanagibashi Rengo Market, Cross Life Hakata Yanagibashi is a modern hotel with simple and functional design. The hotel has 242 guest rooms and a lofty lobby lounge that is also a cafe and bar. Guests who booked a room with breakfast can enjoy buffet breakfast at the 360º Hub on the second floor.
I booked the Comfort Double Room which is a 17 sqm room with a city view. There is double bed and a long desk with couple of drawers. The bathroom is not the typical Japanese built-in bathrooms; it has a standing shower, with a large sink and Japanese toilet.
There is another Cross Life hotel in the neighbourhood. Also consider Cross Life Hakata Tenjin which is 9-minutes away.
Cross Life Hakata Yanagibashi: highlights and lowlights
- Highlights: located next to a fish market, walking distance to many shops and restaurants in Tenjin, 5-minute walk to Watanabe-Dori Station (subway), near bus stop with many buses going to Hakata Station
- Lowlights: no facilities, long wait for using washing machine and dryer (three each)

Address: 1 Chome-6-5 Haruyoshi, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka | Rate: from ¥10,500 for a Comfort Double Room (FYI Comfort Twin Room with Sofa is cheaper)
Where to stay in Fukuoka for First Time Traveller: my recommendation
If I were visiting Fukuoka for the first time, I would stay in the Nakasu neighbourhood of Hakata Ward or anywhere in and around Tenjin and Daimyo neighbourhoods in the Chuo Ward. I like these areas because I like to be in walking distance to attractions, eateries and shops and be close to train stations for day trips.
Out of all the places I stayed in Fukuoka, I liked The Lively Fukuoka Hakata the most. I like the stylish interiors of the hotel. I like the modern room (but I would definitely get a bigger room and not the Standard Double Room again). I especially like how I can walk to many places including Tenjin, Hakata Station and even to Hakata Port to catch my ferry to Busan, South Korea.
The other places I stayed were good. But there are so many hotels in Fukuoka that are worth trying. When I go back, I plan to stay at other hotels and see how they are. I will update this post if I do go back to Fukuoka.
I hope you found this Fukuoka hotel review post useful for finding your accommodation in Fukuoka. Let me know if you are staying at any of these places or if you come across other ones that are excellent for solo travellers.
