Solo travellers and first-time visitors have many options for accommodations in Hoi An, Vietnam. The majority of hotels are located around Hoi An Ancient Town, which is great for anyone with limited time in the city. Plus, other accommodations in different wards around the city can accommodate various budgets and preferences.
If you are looking for Hoi An accommodation and wondering where to stay in Hoi An, then look no further. I’ve been to Hoi An a few times and have spent over a month searching for some of the best hotels in Hoi An. In this post, I’ll show you all the highlights of the six best areas to stay in Hoi An, my honest opinion of the six hotels I stayed, and my overall recommendation for a first-time traveller to Hoi An.
My Hoi An accommodation reviews are my own opinions, and I did not receive any compensation. I only want to share what I love.

Best Places to stay in Hoi An: what you need to know
Before booking a hotel in Hoi An, take a look at some of my helpful tips for booking Hoi An accommodations:
- Breakfast buffets and bicycles are usually included for most Hoi An hotels.
- Sometimes, when you book the cheapest room, the window might face a wall or be on the same floor as the lobby. If having a good view or being away from the noisy lobby is important, consider booking a better/deluxe room.
- Some Hoi An hotels will ask you to post a review on Google or your booking platform because they value the high ratings. When you book, read each review carefully and not just the star rating. And when you check out, post a review that truly represents your experience because travellers like me really appreciate it.
Where to stay in Hoi An for Solo Travellers
If you are visiting Hoi An for the first time, the best place to stay in Hoi An is Minh An or the areas in Cam Pho, Son Phong and Cam Chau that are closest to Hoi An Ancient Town. This is especially important if you follow my 3-day Hoi An itinerary or have limited time in the city.
And if you are visiting for more than a few days, consider staying in areas like Tan An for an awesome boutique hotel, or Cam An for beach life.
Besides these wards, there are other areas to stay in Hoi An like Cam Thanh (east of Hoi An along the river), Cam Nam (southeast of Old Town on the island around Thu Bon River) or Cua Dai (near Cua Dai Beach). But these areas are a bit too far and remote so I decided to skip these neighbourhoods.
During my last trip, I chose to stay in six hotels in six wards I included my hotel reviews for these mid-range hotels, which includes a general overview of the hotel and my honest opinion of each in the highlight and lowlight sections. Here is the list:
| Areas in Hoi An | Characteristics | Hoi An Accommodations |
|---|---|---|
| Minh An (pink) | *Hoi An Ancient Town and the majority of the island of An Hoi *Best for first-time traveller with a high budget | Little Hoi An Boutique Hotel & Spa ($$$) Agoda | Booking |
| Cam Pho (blue) | *West of the Old Town *Excellent mid-range accommodations (in area closest to the Old Town) | Cozy Savvy Boutique Hotel Hoi An ($$) Agoda | Booking |
| Son Phong (green) | *East and north of the Old Town | Hoi An Historic Hotel ($$) Agoda | Booking |
| Cam Chau (purple) | *Countryside between Old Town and beach *Excellent mid-range accommodations (in area closest to the Old Town) | Cozy An Boutique Hotel Hoian ($$) Agoda | Booking |
| Tan An (orange) | *Best for backpacker budget *Many homestays and one excellent boutique hotel | Thalia Boutique Hotel ($$) Agoda | Booking |
| Cam An (yellow) | *Beach area (An Bang Beach and Tan Thanh Beach) | Dechiu Hotel ($$$) Agoda | Booking |
Best Area to stay in Hoi An: Minh An
At the heart of the city of Hoi An is Minh An. This ward includes the centre of Hoi An Ancient Town and the eastern part of the island of An Hoi. Whether you are a first-time traveller or have been to the city before, this is where you will spend the majority of your time in Hoi An.
But there aren’t actually any accommodations within the Old Town. The majority of the accommodations in Minh An are on An Hoi Island. You can find high-end hotels with river views and budget hotels and homestays lining the small streets.
Why you should stay in Minh An:
- Best for first-time travellers who have a mid to high accommodation budget
- Have limited time in Hoi An
- Want to be in the centre of all the activities and vibrant nightlife

Best place to stay in Minh An
1. Little Hoi An Boutique Hotel & Spa
Little Hoi An Boutique Hotel & Spa is a 4-star hotel on the island of An Hoi, which is part of the Minh An ward. The hotel faces the Thu Bon River and is very close to the night market.
There are several room types at Little Hoi An, and I chose a Deluxe Room, which is one of the cheapest. It is a 32 sqm room with a giant king bed, a window with a city view, a desk area, and an ensuite bathroom.
The hotel offers complimentary breakfast and a free bicycle for every guest. It also has a fitness centre and spa facilities. If you want to visit An Bang Beach, the hotel offers complimentary shuttle services three to four times throughout the day.
Little Hoi An Boutique Hotel & Spa: highlights and lowlights
- Highlights: 3-minute walk to the night market; some rooms have a river view
- Lowlights: don’t book the cheapest room (window view of a wall, ground floor, close to the lobby, which is noisy); expensive for a regular room

Best Area to stay in Hoi An: Cam Pho
Cam Pho is a relatively large ward west of Hoi An Ancient Town. The area includes the west end of Old Town and features several attractions, including the Japanese Covered Bridge, Cam Pho Communal House, and Confucius Temple.
The rest of the ward is less crowded and mainly consists of local businesses and residential homes. Many excellent and affordable hotels in Cam Pho ward are concentrated around the eastern border, i.e., close to the Ancient Town.
Why you should stay in Cam Pho:
- Best for first-time travellers who have a moderate budget
- Have limited time in Hoi An
- Short walk to the Old Town (if you are staying in the east end of the ward)

Best Area to stay in Hoi An: Son Phong
Son Phong Ward is directly north and east of Minh An Ward and is only a one-minute walk to Hoi An Historic Town. This area has few attractions except for the Army Blockhouses and Hoi An Central Park, but you can find many excellent eateries and coffee shops here.
There are several accommodations in Son Phong, mainly concentrated around the ward’s centre and Hai Ba Trung Road.
Why you should stay in Son Phong:
- Best for first-time travellers who have a moderate budget
- Short walk to the Old Town (if you are staying in the south end of the ward)

Best place to stay in Son Phong
3. Hoi An Historic Hotel
Hoi An Historic Hotel is one of the closest hotels to Hoi An Ancient Town. The 4-star hotel is located at Son Phong’s edge, only one minute from the Old Town.
Established in 1991, Hoi An Historic Hotel offers six room types, and all 150 rooms are outfitted with traditional decor and modern facilities. I stayed there more years ago and can’t remember which room I booked. But I remember the room was pretty standard. It has a bed, a desk, an ensuite bathroom and a balcony.
The hotel also has an outdoor pool, fitness centre, spa, and on-site restaurants. It offers shuttle bus services to Cua Dai Beach and activities like cooking and language classes.
Hoi An Historic Hotel: highlights and lowlights
- Highlights: 1-minute walk to the Old Town
- Lowlights: older hotel, older rooms, nothing really special

Best Area to stay in Hoi An: Cam Chau
Cam Chau Ward is between the Old Town and the beach. It is a large district with mostly rice fields and sparse residential neighbourhoods.
Even though the area is quite big, there are excellent accommodations in Cam Chau. They mainly concentrate around the ward border closest to the Old Town and along the main road to Cua Dai Beach.
Why you should stay in Cam Chau:
- Best for first-time travellers who have a moderate budget
- Short walk to the Old Town (if you are staying in the west end of the ward)
- Prefer a quieter neighbourhood and get the best value for a nice hotel

4. Cozy An Boutique Hotel Hoian
Cozy An Boutique Hotel Hoian is a newly built hotel on the edge of Cam Chau Ward. The 4-star hotel is east of the Ancient Town and only a 10-minute walk away.
There are several room types, and I chose the Superior Room. It is 38 sqm big, with a double bed, a desk area, an ensuite bathroom and a balcony. The room is brand new and very clean. Even though the superior room is among the more affordable options, it faces the front of the hotel and looks directly at the river (even from the third floor).
Cozy An also has an on-site restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre, and spa. Similar to most hotels in Hoi An, a complimentary breakfast buffet and bicycle are included in the price.
Cozy An Boutique Hotel Hoian: highlights and lowlights
- Highlights: opened recently (i.e. very clean), comfortable mattress topper, river view from the third floor, free breakfast and bicycle
- Lowlights: not much to see in the immediate area

Address: 128 Tran Quang Khai, Cam Chau, Hoi An | Rate: from 980,000 VND
Best Area to stay in Hoi An: Tan An
Tan An Ward is located northwest of Hoi An’s core. It is primarily a residential neighbourhood, so it is quieter and has few tourist attractions. However, you can see the Silk Village and Chua Long Tuyen as part of the neighbourhood.
As for accommodations, there are several hotels and many homestays. You can book the local homestays either via Airbnb or go directly to the homes and ask for the rates.
Why you should stay in Tan An:
- Best for travellers who have a backpacker budget
- Planning on getting around Hoi An with a bicycle or scooter

5. Thalia Boutique Hotel
Thalia Boutique Hotel is a true gem in a quiet residential neighbourhood in the Tan An ward. The 3-star modern boutique hotel is the best accommodation in Hoi An for interior design. They even won the Vmark Vietnam Design Award 2022 for Best Commercial Design.
There are eight room types, each unique. I chose the Superior Garden View Room, which is 42.5 sqm and has a garden view. The room has a giant king bed, a sitting area, an ensuite bathroom, and a terrace balcony facing the hotel’s interior.
The hotel’s price includes complimentary breakfast and a free bicycle, which is great for cycling to the Ancient Town and the beaches.
Thalia Boutique Hotel: highlights and lowlights
- Highlights: modern material and design, unique design for each room, feels cozy even with a lot of concrete, complimentary made-to-order breakfast, free bicycle
- Lowlights: need a bicycle or scooter for going to town and beach, nothing to see in the immediate area

Best Area to stay in Hoi An: Cam An
Cam An Ward is an area east of Hoi An City. It mainly consists of An Bang Beach and Tan Thanh Beach. Most activities happen around the beaches, and there are many beachfront cafes, seafood restaurants, and local coffee shops.
As for accommodations, there are a few mid-range hotels, guesthouses, and Airbnb in Cam An. It’s not a huge selection, but there are certainly great options if you want to stay by the beach.
Why you should stay in Cam An:
- Best for travellers who have a moderate to high budget
- Want to stay near the beaches of Hoi An

6. Dechiu Hotel
Dechiu Hotel is a design boutique hotel near Tan Thanh Beach in the Cam An Ward. It has six types of rooms, each unique and furnished with decorations and artworks of Vietnam’s ethnic minority people.
I stayed in the Terrace Room, a 45-square-meter room with a queen-size bed, a sofa bed, a desk, an ensuite bathroom, a balcony, and a beach-facing terrace. The room is cozy, and the mattress is super comfortable.
The hotel also has a cafe on the ground floor, a wonderful ceramic display, and no other facilities.
Dechiu Hotel: highlights and lowlights
- Highlights: very comfortable mattress, each room is unique, well-designed interior, run by a group of women, the best accommodation in Hoi An if you want to stay by the beaches
- Lowlights: not much to do in the immediate area, no other facilities besides the cafe, breakfast not included

Where to stay in Hoi An Vietnam: My Recommendation
If I were visiting Hoi An all over again, I would stay at Cozy Savvy Boutique Hotel at the edge of Cam Pho Ward because I like to be within walking distance of Hoi An Ancient Town and have access to a free bike to cycle to all the places outside of the city I mentioned in my Hoi An itinerary.
Or I would stay at Cozy An Boutique Hotel at the city’s east end. The walk to Old Town is not too far, and they have free bicycles, too. I really like all the Cozy Hotels (I’ve stayed at Cozy Hoian Boutique Villas before, too).
I would stay at the Dechiu Hotel by the beach if I had a few extra days. I love being by the water, and it is a short walk to An Bang Beach. Plus, I love the design of the hotel, and it is operated by a group of women (I love to support local businesses that are passionately run by women).
It’s hard for me to say which is the best accommodation in Hoi An because I have a few favourites. Hopefully, this post will help you learn more about the different areas in Hoi An and give you a bit of insight into some of the hotels in these areas.
Let me know which Hoi An hotel you decide to book for your next trip. Or if you found any other hotels that are absolutely worth recommending to other solo travellers. I would love to know!
