18 Solo Travel Quotes that will Inspire Your Inner Wanderlust

Below is a list of my favourite travelling alone quotes. Some of the solo travel quotes inspired my early travel journeys, and many of these going solo quotes continue to inspire me today and remind me how important travelling is to me.

The woman who follows the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd. The woman who walks alone is likely to find herself in places no one has ever been.

Albert Einstein

I really resonate with this travel alone quote. I never thought I’d be someone who would travel solo. Travelling solo has helped me to become a more confident person in many different facets of my life. I can take more chances when it comes to travel, willing to go to places that I have never been before and enjoying the process and not be in a state of fear.

Moreover, I feel my confidence also transpired to my everyday life. I am more outspoken, not afraid to do most things, be more initiative and more decisive.

Because I took my first solo trip many years ago, I am forever a changed person and am grateful for all my solo travel experiences.

When you’re travelling with someone, you share each discovery. But when you are alone, you have to carry each experience with you like a secret, something you have to write on your heart because there’s no other way to preserve it.

Shauna Niequist

I love solo travelling quotes like this one! I remember when I tried to explain the happiness and joy from my first solo trip to my friends when I returned home. I don’t think they understood it. But that’s okay. As long as I get it, that’s all that matters.

Sometimes the journey has to be traveled alone in order to appreciate the strengths that lie deep inside of you.

Steven Aitchison

Nothing you learn in school can prepare you for what you will learn when you travel solo. There is no syllabus that will show you exactly what you will see or encounter. And there is no grading system to let you know if you passed or failed.

For me, travelling solo is the best way to learn about yourself and find out what you are truly made of.

When the traveler goes alone he gets acquainted with himself.

Liberty Hyde Bailey

Or herself.

There are many amazing quotes on solo travel and this one really got me.

I didn’t think I would be brave enough to travel on my own. It was such a foreign theory to me at the time, and nobody around me was travelling solo. But it wasn’t really about bravery. It was about trying new things and discovering what I like.

As you travel solo, being totally responsible for yourself, it’s inevitable that you will discover just how capable you are.

So true. I never thought I’d be capable of travelling independently (even though I am an only child). The idea of travelling by myself was so far fetched.

But the more I put myself out there, the more I feel accomplished. It was just a matter of giving myself the opportunity to test my limit and really see what I am made of.

I love how these travel alone quotes have to do with discovering yourself and find out what you are capable of.

Traveling alone will be the scariest, most liberating, life changing experience of your life. Try it at least once!

I completely agree with these solo travel quotes. Whenever people ask me about travelling solo, I always suggest trying it. Everyone has a different experience of travelling alone.

If you don’t like it, at least you can say you’ve tried travelling on your own. And you put a big checkmark on your to-do list, say you’ve done it, move on and never do it again.

But if you love it, you have just entered into a world that you can only dream of. And the journey only gets better!

A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.

Lao Tzu

This solo travel quote sums it up quite nicely. It is always about the journey and enjoying every moment whether it is good or bad. There is always a learning opportunity and the soul continues to learn.

To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world. You have no idea of what is in store for you, but you will, if you are wise and know the art of travel, let yourself go on the stream of the unknown and accept whatever comes in the spirit in which the gods may offer it.

Freya Stark

I used to travel with very detailed itineraries for each trip. I would know exactly where I will be each day, where I would stay and what I would do, etc.

And as an INTJ, letting go of the idea of planning a comprehensive itinerary is a complete nightmare. But at the same time, the amount of work and time required for planning the perfect trip was just too much for me to handle.

So I let go. And as I travel more spontaneously, I find that I enjoy the unknown. I really like the idea of not knowing where I will be next. Some of my favourite trips were born out of the spur of the moment decisions. And those decisions led me to travel to amazing places and meeting wonderful people along the way.

Solo travel not only pushes you out of your comfort zone, it also pushes you out of the zone of others’ expectations.

Suzy Strutner

Yup. There is very rewarding to push yourself to do more, especially when it comes to travelling solo. Honestly, it is not really about what others think of you or expect you to be, but it is more about pushing yourself and see what you are capable of.

There is something so different and empowering about travelling solo. It’s a unique experience and one that is so self-educating.

Kunal Khemu

I always feel energized when I come home from a solo trip because travelling alone allows you to spend time the way you want and you get to be with your own thoughts.

I think and reflect a lot when I am on my own. Usually, I would come home from a solo trip and have made a major decision while I was away. On one trip, I decided I was going to quit my job and go back to design school full time. On another trip, I decided I would sell all my belongings and move across the world.

I’ve made many life-changing decisions while I travelled alone. And I wouldn’t change a thing!

I wondered why it was that places are so much lovelier when one is alone.

Daphne du Maurier

Like I mentioned before, I used to travel with a very detailed plan. And I would fill each day with many activities. And I would be devastated if I only did nine of the ten things I wanted to do.

But I’ve changed the way I travel solo. I am learning how to slow travel and enjoy each moment. Rather than doing a hundred things in a day, I would go for a walk in the park, read a book or buy food at a local market. And I am learning to be fully present and be appreciative of the moment. And I feel I can only do this when I travel alone.

Traveling solo does not always mean you’re alone. Most often, you meet marvelous people along the way and make connections that last a lifetime.

Jacqueline Boone

When you travel solo, you will meet a lot of like-minded people. I was lucky to meet a lot of wonderful people while I travelled solo. And I still keep in touch with many of them. I think these friendships are special because we shared something special bond.

The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.

Eleanor Roosevelt

Ever since I was young, I’ve always wanted to wander. I was the kid at the dinner table that would eat really quickly so I can go play or wander around.

And I am still somewhat the same. I always want to go out, discover something new and see something different. Perhaps it is my curious mind, or I have ants in my pants (Ha!); it pushes me to discover the world around me.

To be fully alive, fully human, and completely aware is to be continuously thrown out of the nest.

Pema Chödrön

I am happiest when I am travelling. I don’t need to be staying at a 5-star hotel or a high-end resort to be happy. As long as I am travelling somewhere or experiencing something new and different, then I am happy and fully alive.

Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

Carl Sagan

I love quotes like this because they can apply to many things. For me, the quote is about discovering yourself through travelling. And this is how I feel about travelling solo. You never know until you go out there.

You do not travel if you are afraid of the unknown. You travel for the unknown, the reveals you within yourself.

Ella Maillart

The unknown used to cripple me because I don’t like unpredictability. Maybe it is the Capricorn in me?

And I still don’t really like it, but I learned how to cope with it.

The beauty of the unknown has to do with how you handle unpredictable situations. And travelling solo has taught me that you cannot control everything, and sometimes you just have to go with the flow and be at peace with it.

You must go on adventures to find out where you belong.

Sue Fitzmaurize

My friends joked with me that I don’t have a fixed address, and I am a citizen of the world. I don’t feel I belong to just one place, but rather, I feel I belong wherever I go.

Travelling solo has taught me that I can adapt to many places and situations. I always find myself saying “I love this place! I could live here!” Maybe I belong to many places and not just one…

Travel brings power and love back to your life.

Out of all the travel solo quotes, this is my favourite. I truly believe that travelling solo has allowed me to be the person I am meant to be. If it weren’t for travelling, my life would be very different now.

Which travel alone quotes do you resonate with?

I sure hope they do. I read these travel alone quotes from time to time to remind myself that there’s still so much to see and learn. I never want to stop travelling and learning.

And you don’t have to participate in adrenaline sports or do something death-defying in order to conquer your fear of travelling solo. You simply have to try travelling on your own. Just leaving the comforts of your own home, doing things on your own is already a big step.

I love love loveeee this post so much!! Solo travelling is so empowering. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life thus far and I can’t encourage people enough to really give it a shot. That quote by Suzy Strutner is so true and powerful. Definitely writing that one down as a reminder. Thanks for this post!
